The Chakras Before we get into too much detail, I want to give you some brief information about where the teachings of chakras stems from. I also want you to know that I will share some common information about the chakras, which you will find if you read books or choose to study, but I will also share information I have learned through my personal experience in working with energy. With that said, there is a lot of information out there about the chakras and what you will come across may vary, depending on the school of thought. So let’s go over the history of teachings…
The chakras were mentioned in the Vedas, which are the oldest written tradition in India, and they were referred to as the chariot wheels of the Rulers. Then in other texts, such as the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the chakras were referred to as psychic centers of consciousness. These were all written between 1500 – 200 BC.
Moving much further along, Carl Jung, who founded analytical psychology, studied the chakras and referred to them as the gateways of consciousness. He lived from 1865 - 1961
As we move ahead, author Christopher Hills, a British American, wrote a book in 1977 called Nuclear Evolution, and he suggested that each chakra corresponds with one of the seven colors of the spectrum. He also associated each chakra with a personality type. Christopher wrote several books on consciousness, but the teachings of this particular book is why many people began using or associating specific colors with the chakras, as we commonly see depicted today. So as we discuss each chakra, you will hear me refer to the “associated” colors, but people who are able to actually see energy will tell you that your energies are a multitude of colors! The color of your chakra energy, as well as color within your auric field, may vary depending on the types of energies you’re generating at any given moment. You will also find that we have numerous chakras; more than the main seven that we will discuss in this course. But these main seven are great to understand when learning about energetic flow in relation to your life experience and how you can read and transform energies! Your Chakra Energy The chakras are points of light, which are directly linked with your consciousness. Now, as I mentioned, they are typically depicted as shades of colors, but I want you to consider the chakras as shades of wisdom and enlightenment.
The more aware you become, the stronger your energy becomes. When you are weak in mind and feeling, your energy becomes weak and susceptible to many things, such as poor health and mentality. So, as you improve your mind, you improve your energy.
The chakras reveal how you’re evolving from “I am SELF” consciousness into “I am ALL” consciousness. These energies reveal your process of evolution from human perspective into universal knowing. Remember, your thoughts, feelings and beliefs feed into your chakra energy. Then the energies you generate influence your life experience, what you attract into your life and how you live. This awareness will heighten your ability to read energy. Upper and Lower Chakra Energy
Now in reference to the seven chakras that run along the spine, you will often hear about the upper and lower chakras.
The Lower Chakras: These energies are connected with our Human Experience (“I am SELF” consciousness). These energies are instinctive.
Root: Survival, Family and Stability
Sacral: Feeling, Creation and Experience
Solar Plexus: Self-Identify, Fight or Flight
The Center of Your Being is the Heart Chakra. This is the Passage or Bridge between Upper and Lower Chakras. The heart is the blend of consciousness (human experience and spiritual knowing).
Heart: Love, Gratitude, Grief, Exchange
The Upper Chakras: These energies are connection to our Spirituality or Spirit (“I am ALL” consciousness). These energies are intuitive.
Throat: Truth, Communication
Third Eye: Knowing, Vision, Dreams
Crown: Understanding, Spirituality, Connection
The lower chakras reveal your perception and belief about what you experience (human perspective).
The upper chakras reveal truth and knowing of universal wisdom (spiritual knowing).
The heart embodies your existence, being human (physical and nonphysical).
When you have an awareness of being both physical and nonphysical, you can choose how to care for yourself, on all levels. You want to consider:
How you live your life
How you nurture your physical body
How you maintain energetic balance
All of this affects your energies, so you want to check in with yourself. Refresh on all levels, daily. Be mindful of your thoughts, words and actions. Notice your behaviors, internally and externally.
Now, let’s explore each chakra individually! After you read about each chakra, connect with the energy, intuitively, or pull cards to reveal the energies you’re currently holding in your energy centers. Take note of what cxomes up for you in each chakra. If you decide to use oracle cards, leave the cards visible until you have seven cards laid out, root to crown.
The Root Chakra: Your Foundation
This is the beginning of consciousness or the seed of conscious awareness. This is the energy of what you create. It’s your sense of belonging. It’s your feeling of safety and security. The Root is the consciousness of what you are beginning to materialize.
The root chakra is where identity is born and all things related to “I begin” “I exist”. It is the root of “I am” consciousness. The recognition of your existence begins here. Now, remember that each chakra is comprised of several energies, so again, see them as points of light, or streams of consciousness.
Now to get acquainted with your root chakra energy, place your hand well below your navel, in between the pelvic bones. This is your Root Chakra. Connect to these energies and consider what you’re streaming in this consciousness. Do you feel supported and a sense of belonging? Why or why not? How can you heal or forgive in order to transform those energies and truly connect with the beautiful and supported being that you are? Connect with your root to reveal what you’re carrying in this chakra.
Seed Sound: LAM
Associated Color: Red
Out of Balance: Discomfort being in-body, money issues, family/home issues, fear of security/stability
The Sacral Chakra: Your Creations
This is where the seed of consciousness is born into feeling. You are not your feelings, but your feelings condition your experience. This is also the energy of how you create. Think of this point of light as gravity; it’s the weight of the human perspective and conditioning. You believe your feelings and your feelings become your stories. Your experience and how you experience is fed into this consciousness.
Feeling is the basis of our experiences. The way you feel resonates with you on all levels of consciousness and becomes infused with your system of beliefs. You create or destroy based on what has been felt through experience. The feeling within this energy often conflicts with the knowing of the mind. So, I want you to consider this; where does feeling come from?
What we feel is based on experience AND your detection of energy. So the Sacral Chakra is like a radar; it is the energy of instinct. It’s your ability to detect; “you have a feeling” about something; this statement is quite literal. What you feel is a combination of your instinct, your programming/conditioning and your soul-level truth.
There is also a heightened awareness of love in this chakra. Love is the seed from which all things are born. Love of something initiates creation. So, now place your hands over your navel. This is your sacral energy. Connect with this energy and consider what you feed into this consciousness. Are you connected to your feelings? Do you feel creative? Why or why not? How can you heal or forgive in order to transform those energies and truly connect with the emotional and creative being that you are?
Seed Sound: VAM
Associated Color: Orange
Out of Balance: Over-emotional, blaming others, lack of creativity and/or sexuality
The Solar Plexus: Your Shine
This is your powerhouse! So we have moved up from the sacral energy, which is all about feeling and the solar plexus energy is where your feeling becomes identity; it’s your personal view of self. “I am (whatever you identify as)”. This is how you present what you’ve created in your consciousness. It’s how you identify yourself based on your feeling and beliefs.
The Solar plexus is like awakening of spirit. This is, in essence, what it is to be alive! This is where you stream consciousness of wellbeing, nourishment of mind body and spirit. This is like your light switch, you’re on or off, you’re existing or living. This is where you negotiate with life and rationalize with experience. It is your power AND potential. It’s where you radiate your Divine nature. So, place your hands just below your rib cage. This is your solar plexus. I want you to consider your level of confidence in this energy. In which areas of life do you feel you shine and where do you lack confidence? Consider why…
How can you heal or forgive in order to transform those energies and truly connect with the powerful and radiant being that you are?
All of your chakras have an influence on what you attract back into your life because you attract based on your beliefs, thoughts and feelings. But the solar plexus is commonly associated with manifesting because it’s also the energy of what you believe you deserve! Connect with this chakra to see what type of energy you’re generating.
Seed Sound: RAM
Associated Color: Yellow
Out of Balance: Ego, Power-Hungry, Lack of Self-Esteem
Now, I want you to notice how you’re sitting…how’s your posture? When we slouch, we tend to bend right at the solar plexus. It’s like suffocating this energy. So if you are slouching now, sit up and notice how it feels.
When you are sitting or walking from now on, think about your posture and how you’re radiating! Are you crushing down on your solar plexus energy, or are you radiating out into the world? When I catch myself slouching, I realign and it really shifts the way I feel. You actually open your whole person by sitting with a straight spine and allowing your blood and energies to flow with more ease! So again, this energy is your personal power…how you project yourself out into the world around you. The Heart Chakra: Your Connection
This chakra is where we question the human experience. It is where we join the physical experience with our connection to spirituality. It’s literally the meeting of the minds; all levels of consciousness.
Remember, the lower chakras represent feeling and perception based on our experiences, and the upper chakras represent knowing and understanding based on spiritual connection. The heart is a bridge and there is so much that occurs within heart chakra energy! This is why we are also prone to being more guarded with this energy than with others. It’s our vulnerability, where we can be accessed in ways that really get to the core of who we are. It’s where we hurt and love most deeply.
And because of how vulnerable we tend to feel in this energy, the heart can also become our main source of disconnection. We will guard and block these energies to avoid being hurt, but really, it’s just that we avoid showing or admitting that we are actually hurt.
What’s interesting are the energies right below and right above the heart, and how we use these energies to guard the heart chakra! I told you how the solar plexus is your self-identity and personal power, but when out of balance, it can also become the energies of ego, which are often triggered to guard the heart. Then right above the heart chakra, we have the throat chakra, which we will explore next, but for now, I want you to know that when this chakra is out of balance, there is a tendency to avoid or deny truth. Often times, this is also a mechanism to protect or shield ourselves.
Now, when there is harmony between these three chakras: the solar plexus, heart and throat, you are able to speak the truth of your heart, lovingly and with confidence. The Heart Chakra is the Universe within you; moving out of self and into awareness and ability to connect with ALL. It’s the exchange of light; import and export. It’s access beyond self. Consider the heart your gatekeeper of the mind body and spirit. It’s like the command-center of your being. It is your guide! And to TRULY know YOU is to know your heart!
Well, the heart is your internal GPS. It’s the road map you examine when choosing how to navigate through this journey called life. We have many questions about our path and purpose, which formulate because of our connection between life experience and the energies of our soul level truths. The Heart contains all of this information: past, future and current decisions. It is the valley of pathways and our free will allows us to determine which paths best suit us in the NOW.
The truth is that all paths lead to YOU, your progression and understanding. But some paths are more direct, while others contain lessons that you may seek on a subconscious level. And of course, the path you choose in now will determine the types of experiences you encounter in the future. But no matter which direction you head in, you will be faced with choices for your soul evolution! So there is no wrong path. Again, all roads lead to you, your progression and understanding. Remember, the heart has elements of all other chakras. So, anything you seek to understand, the answers are within you at all times and can be accessed through heart connection or heart centeredness. You gain clarity through heart connection.
And as I said earlier, it is your internal Universe; the heart contains elements of your experiences, knowing and feeling. It’s located at the very center of your chest, not where the physical heart is. Now place your hands in prayer position at the very center of your chest. Having our hands in prayer position is a type of mudra. What you’re doing is connecting all of your energy channels when you place your hands in this position. It signifies wholeness. The left side of your body correlates with your divine feminine energies and the right side of your body correlates with divine masculine. Now breathe in this space and feel your wholeness and connection to self, while noticing the placement of your hands in front of your heart.
In terms of its unique energies, the heart is all about compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and LOVE. So, consider all that you’re grateful for. Be present and really acknowledge the gifts of life! Give thanks for your breath, your life force energy, and consider your level of compassion towards others. If you catch yourself in judgment, pause and remember that everyone has a story, everyone has wounding and everyone is trying their best to learn on their journeys, too. Our lessons are different, our responses may be different, but remember that we are connected. Therefore, a lack of compassion or inability to love others is indication that you may need to work on compassion and love of self!
As I mentioned earlier, we are vulnerable in these energies. We have all experienced hurt, but we do not want to operate in the NOW based on the past. So in order to correct and learn from experience, we need only to examine what has occurred to cause the act of protection. This is where you connect with your energy to reveal:
The heart of the matter
The facts, without personal feeling
Options to forgive and heal to lessen the weight you are carrying
The heart is meant to be exposed. It sends signals out AND receives information in, at higher levels than the conscious mind. The key is learning how to connect with and understand your own heart language.
Seed Sound: YAM
Associated Color: Green
Out of balance: guarded, unable to give and/or receive, lack of compassion, grudges
The Throat Chakra: Your Expression
This is the center of your communication, your creative expression…your voice, in all forms! It is not just verbal communication, but any form of expression (art, writing, music, etc). Now remember, the seed of your creation is root energy, the birth of your creation begins in sacral energy, but here in the throat chakra is where you share your creation outwardly.
This is also your relationship with truth: speaking and being able to hear truth. Throat chakra energy is about seeking to understand. You being to question in the heart and the throat is the beginning of your quest for knowledge and wisdom, which you will find in the third eye and crown chakra.
Now, place your hands in the center of your neck. This is your throat chakra energy. It’s where you are able to “read between the lines” as we say. You are able to decipher all language, be it body or verbal communication. As I mentioned above, it’s also about what you are able to hear.
I want you to consider your voice and your comfort level with expression. I also want you to consider anything you may have trouble communicating, or situations where you may have trouble verbalizing your truth. With this in mind, connect with your throat chakra, considering the WHY and options to heal and move forward.
Seed Sound: HAM
Associated Color: Sky Blue
Out of balance: dishonesty, trouble with communication
The Third Eye: Your Vision
Now the third-eye is what we hear about most often because of its perceived magic! It is the energy of intuition and your ability to see beyond the physical realm. One thing I want you to be clear about is the difference between intuition in the third-eye and the energies of instinct, found in the sacral chakra. Intuition is your knowing. Instinct is more primal and the sacral is connected with your beliefs. There is a difference between what you believe (sacral) and what you know (third-eye). Remember, the lower chakras are more tied to human experience, based on your system of beliefs, and here in the upper chakras, you are tapping into the energies of spirituality and universal knowing.
The third-eye is also related to your dreams and imagination. Again, it’s your ability to see beyond the physical eyes; it’s your inner vision.
Your third eye is located in the center of your forehead, between your eyebrows. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your third eye, and with your eyes closed, see if you can envision a circle. Notice if you can see the circle as a color and note which color to you see, feel or sense? Now, with your eyes closed, try to envision your bedroom from childhood. How vivid is the image? Do you see, feel or sense the image? Take a breath and reconnect with being present in your body. Then, bring your awareness back to the center of your head to reveal what you’re focused on in the third-eye.
Seed Sound: SHAM
Associated Color: Indigo
Out of balance: no dream recall, lack of imagination, disconnected from intuition, lack of clarity
The Crown Chakra: Your Divinity
This is your connection with all there is! The crown chakra is your realization of “I Am” or “I am ONE with all that exists”. In the third-eye we gain knowledge, but in the crown, we tap into divine wisdom and understanding. And again, this is different than belief. This is knowing without attachment to ego or creation of our own stories. This is beyond I am SELF and true recognition of unity and oneness.
You will most commonly here about the crown chakra in relation to spirituality. It is your connection to Source or the Divine. When developing spiritual gifts, many people focus on the third-eye and crown, but remember, there is balance in all things. Although the crown is your connection to your non-physical existence, you are also a physical being. With that, it is important to nurture your all of your energies, root to crown.
Now connect with your crown chakra energy to consider your energies surrounding:
Connection or lack of connection
Understanding or misunderstanding
You are ONE with ALL that exists!
Seed Sound: OM
Associated Color: Violet
Out of balance: depression, lack of focus, obsession with spirituality (lack of grounding), reclusive
